This episode of The IR thinker explores the evolving dynamics of inter-Korean relations with Professor Yangmo Ku, focusing on North Korea’s designation of South Korea as its “primary foe”, the implications of Pyongyang’s nuclear and conventional build-up, and Seoul’s strategic options in response. The discussion situates the Korean Peninsula within a wider regional context, examining North Korea’s growing cooperation with Russia, China’s dilemmas, ASEAN’s stance, NATO’s role in the Indo-Pacific, and the deepening of Japan–South Korea security cooperation.
Yangmo Ku is Chair of the History and Political Science Department and Associate Professor of Political Science at Norwich University in the United States, where he also serves as Associate Director of the Peace and War Center and Editor of the Journal of Peace and War Studies.
